JP leader ‘abducted, beaten’ by Quader Mirza, followers, Says alleged victim’s wife

Abdul Quader Mirza, the Basurhat municipality mayor of Noakhali, and his associates allegedly kidnapped and assaulted a Jatiya Party leader on Wednesday.

Md Saiful Islam Swapon is currently being treated at a Dhaka hospital.

"Quader Mirza, his followers hit my husband's forehead and broke his legs," claimed Saiful’s wife Nazma Islam. She is also a member of women's reserved seats in the Charfakira union churchad.

Saiful's son MoinulIslam Shaon claimed that Quader Mirza (also the younger brother to Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader), and his followers kidnapped Saiful from Basurhat Bazar on Wednesday around 5pm. They then took Saiful into a room on second floor of the municipal structure.

Saiful's family, along with local JP men, rushed to Saiful's rescue and got the information. The man was taken to a local hospital. Shaon said that his condition worsened and that he was transferred to Dhaka yesterday morning.

When Abdul Latif, the president of JP's Companiganj unit, was contacted, he said that he had gone to the municipal building at 10:15 on the day of contact and taken Saiful out.

However, he said that he didn't see Quader Mirza there, and refused to discuss the incident further.

Mirza was unable to be reached by phone for comment. Mirza's personal assistant Hamidullah, general secretary of Jubo League’s Basurhat unit denied the claims.

Contacted by OC Md Saifuddin Anwar from Companiganj Police Station, he said he heard Mirza only scolde Saiful but he didn't get any information about an assault.

Yesterday, no one filed a complaint to the police until 7:59pm.
